Thought for today

James' introduction to todays readings.

Mothering Sunday

All of readings today speak of the reality of human suffering, mostly suffering we inflict on each other, and how we can support each other. As we contemplate the events of last Wednesday in London, our readings have messages for us, particularly about supporting one another, whatever our religion or ethnicity or social standing.

In the Old Testament Reading Moses, a Hebrew and slave is rescued and adopted by a Egyptian princess, and worshipper of the various gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt. She then agrees to share the care of the child with his natural Hebrew slave family. In the Gospel, Jesus is supported in his suffering by the presence of his mother and other women friends, and his beloved disciple John. In them he founds the embryonic Church, to be a family to offer support and comfort to each other.

St Paul reminds the Corinthians that Jesus suffered for us and is with us in our suffering, and that though far away, Paul suffers with them, but also they share together in the consolation that comes from Jesus. We can share through our thoughts and prayers with all those suffering through the London terrorist attack by identifying with them in our common humanity and praying for them.

On this Mothering Sunday, let us remember that we are all called to ‘mother’ one another, whoever we are, and that we, as a whole are Mother Church, are called by God to be a ‘mother’ to our suffering and needy world, serving God who is both mother and father of everyone.

Reflection

Thank all who have since your earliest days mothered you… and those who ‘mother’ you today… Be thankful too for the recent ‘mothering’ of others that you have done, through your thoughts and prayers, your words and actions… Think about the coming week, and the opportunities it will bring for ‘mothering’ for you to give… and for you to receive….
